1. Switch your gas water heater to the “pilot” setting. Turn off your electric water heater at the circuit breaker

2. Turn off the water supply. Rotate the cold water ball valve clockwise. Pull down the cold water lever (located above the tank)

3. Allow the water heater to cool off for 30 minutes

4. Connect a water hose to the drain valve at the bottom of the tank

5. Place the other end of the hose somewhere it can drain

6. Switch on the pressure relief valve on the top of the tank

7. Turn a small slot on the drain valve to open it

8. Allow the water to completely drain

9. Flush out any leftover sediment by using the cold water valve/lever.

10. Close the valve and fill the tank with cold water once the flush water runs clear

11. Turn the water heater back on when the tank is filled
